Vanessa was born on June 20, 1977 in London, with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which causes joint problems and affects leg mobility. The condition began to affect her as a teenager. She also has dystonia, a neurological condition that causes involuntary muscle spasms and contractures
She began wheelchair racing in 2012 at the Haringey Wheelers club in England.
She then switched to shot put in December 2014.
She was named the 2015 Para Sports Performer of the Year in Haringey, England.
Vanessa originally took up Para athletics to strengthen her arm muscles. After attending a throwing try-out session, she was invited to train with coach Alison O'Riordan.
Vanessa started her international career in 2016 when she represented Great Britain at the Tournament Grand Prix in Dubai.
In 2018 she received a Mike Brace CBE Award for Individual Achievement of the Year from the University of East London in England.
